Although I work for the Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Studio, I go to St Paul’s Cathedral once a week for volunteer work. Just finished embroidering the cross the other day.

This little piece of Goldwork embroidery will be made up as a stole.

The design comes from the original cope, which was made for St Paul’s Cathedral’s 300th anniversary. This is before I joined this embroidery team. It was a big project then. These vestments were designed by Marie Brisou, who won a competition when she was a student at Central Saint Martins. Gainsborough Silk in Suffolk wove the fabric for vestments, and the volunteers of embroidery team was led by a project manager Kate Sinton.

After the big project, some left the team; some joined (like me). We still continue volunteering, working with the collections department. Now the team is called the Broderers of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Why are we making another stole with this design? Actually we are making a new cope for a new lady priest. She is rather too ‘petite’ to wear the exiting cope.
